چکیده
This paper presents a model-based approach on the analysis of complex multidisciplinary electrochemical processes, with implementation on a reactor for the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to formate/formic acid. The process is regarded as a system of interacting physical and electrochemical mechanisms. A process model is developed by combining individual mathematical sub-models of the mechanisms, organised at groups of compartments following the physical process structure. This approach results in a generic reconfigurable model that can be used as a part of integrated systems, and to test design modifications. The approach is demonstrated on an electrochemical cell, where CO2 is converted to formate/formic acid. The model captures the molar transportation under electric field, the two-phase flow effects, and the key electrochemical reactions. The model is calibrated and validated against experimental data obtained from a continuous flow cell. The key parameters affecting the process performance are discussed through scale-up analysis. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

متن کاملRevealing the active intermediates in the oxidation of formic acid on Au and Pt(111).
The mechanisms of formic acid (HCOOH) oxidation on Au(111) under gas-phase and electrochemical conditions was studied by using density functional theory and then compared with the analogous processes on Pt(111). Our results demonstrate that a mechanism involving a single intermediate molecule is preferred on both Au and Pt(111). Furthermore, under gas-phase conditions, HCOOH oxidation proceeds ...

CO2 is a major contributor to global warming and greenhouse effect. To reduce the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere, various strategies for CO2 conversion to fuels have been developed. Among the various systems for CO2 conversion, photoelectrochemical and electrochemical CO2 reductions have been attracted as a promising system due to their ambient reaction conditions and high energy efficie...
متن کاملHierarchical Cu pillar electrodes for electrochemical CO2 reduction to formic acid with low overpotential.
To achieve high performance of electrochemical CO2 reduction, a series of Cu pillar electrodes (Cu-2.5 h, Cu-5 h) were fabricated by using an electrodeposition method, and then their catalytic activities and reaction mechanisms were investigated. The series of Cu pillar electrodes exhibited improved electrocatalytic activities toward CO2 reduction to formic acid (HCOOH) as Cu pillars on electro...
